How Video Phone Technology Works

You’ve probably heard the buzz about using video phones for the home or business but a lot of people have no idea how modern video phone technology works.  Video phones have been used by businesses for decades but in the past the slow and clumsy technology that was available meant that the picture was usually not that good and the process of making a video call was complicated.

Once high speed Internet connections became widely available video phone technology became more streamlined and a lot more efficient.  These days video phone technology is as cutting edge as most of the “smart” cell phones that are on the market.  In fact, some video phones use the same technology as “smart” cell phones but they do it using the Internet instead of using a cell phone network and the calls are a lot cheaper than calls made from a cell phone.

Video phones use the Internet to stream both voice calls and images.  The spoken part of the call uses VOIP technology, the same kind that companies use to make phone calls using the Internet instead of cell sites and land lines.  The video portion of the call is streamed in much the same way that online videos are streamed.  Using the Internet is a cheap and effective way to send both voice calls and video so today’s video phones use high speed Internet to operate instead of traditional phone lines.

Have you ever used a webcam? Many computers these days come with webcams built in.  Using a video phone is a lot like using a webcam except that you don’t need to be on a computer and you can talk to the person you’re calling and be seen at the same time.  Video phones are more reliable than webcams and have much better image quality.
